Henrietta Stuart

Nature is the basis, the starting point, for my paintings which rapidly take on a direction of their own where the dancing light or the feel of the wind becomes the main focus. They are compositions woven from images of the natural world.

It is the power and energy of nature that excites me.  Light and movement allow the creation of the space in my work, often opening up huge vistas. The finished pieces range from almost totally abstract compositions evoking a sense of place to more easily recognisable landscape images: the natural world modulated by time and season, disclosed by visual texture and colour.

I came back to the UK in 2011 from the Languedoc in France and started work in Wimbledon Art Studios. Since my return I have moved away from the blues of the Languedoc to a far more dramatic palette. I have fallen increasingly in love with the British light. The drama of the cloudscapes, mixed with the subtlety of the morning light , or the glory of a sunset have become the essence of my compositions.

It is these moments that fuel my days. My paintings are rarely site specific they are a fusion of the vast coastal vistas and the more intimate inland light.  Compositions woven from memory infused with a sense of place.

I build up the paintings using layer on layer of paint playing with the transparent and opaque qualities of different colours, techniques used by Titian and Turner. I have started to incorporate silver/copper and gold leaf into the paintings giving a different play on light using the reflective quality to add another dimension.

My works are to be found in collections in New York, Houston, Vancouver, Sydney, Perth, and Paris as well as the UK.
